Designing a Technology Plan

Advice on designing a technology plan can be a complicated process. The plan should support your business strategy and goals, and writing it like writing a business, budget or marketing proposal will help simplify the process. You should include buying guides, reviews and product feedback, as well as performance. These ideas can help businesses decide on the best route to take when buying. With any business, anything you buy can be an investment, good or bad. Understanding what you are buying and what your budget allows can be a good investment by allowing the company to not waste funds on unnecessary purchases or quick fixes to a problem, which may lead to more out of pocket expenses.

Technology can range anywhere from the telephone on your desk to complex networks of computers and software. When considering technology purchases keep in mind:

  • Scalability – Determine where your company will be in about two to three years. Invest in products that allow your resources to grow with your companie’s growth.
  • IT training – If you invest in this type of technology, take the time to educate your employees on the functionality - it can save you time, money and grief down the road.
  • Simplicity – Keep your systems simple. For example, it may be more cost effective if you buy pre-packaged Computer systems. These systems come with the majority of the components needed for everyday computing.
  • Security – This is very important for companies to keep in mind. Safeguard proprietary information, backup your systems regularly, and use common sense computer security measures.

I suggest looking into what your company needs, what problems need to be solved, and how technology will assist you. In some cases, it may be necessary for the business to seek expert advice. Getting references is necessary. Where there is money to be made there is sure to be someone to take advantage of you and your money. Research and know what you are getting for your dollar.
